I'd seen these styles around and knew I loved it, and I didn't want to block my beautiful backsplash I installed. Seemed like a win-win for me!
I always start my projects by taking a photo of the space I plan to work on and drawing the measurements on. It helps to get it out of my head into 2D before I start to go for 3D.
Then I went to my second home, Home Depot, to my favorite pipe aisle and I started to put together my pipe like a puzzle. Don't be afraid to take of the plastic and I cannot stress this enough-- TEST IT IN THE AISLE (if you forgot your measuring tape, go borrow one from the tool aisle!). This will save you MANY trips back. Also stick with one size across your pieces-- these are 1/2".
This is me stoked to show you the pipe aisle. 🔥😎 I don't recommend buying black pipe- it's black because it has oil on it and is a pain to clean. Get the galvanized steel and paint it black with a metal-specific spray paint (my favorite is Rust-Oleum, but anything that says metal as a surface recommendation will work!).
Home Depot will cut the pipes down to the size you need so don't get intimidated if you aren't finding the exact length you need. Go bigger and cut it down. Sometimes I go much bigger and get 2 (or more) pieces from it.
The names for the pieces are both self explanatory and confusing, but these are the pieces I used (labeled in the pic below):
Cross
Nipple
90° elbow
Cap
Floor flange
Tee
1/2" pipe to length you need
Clean your pipes! They are really greasy (especially if you had them cut anything down to size) and the paint won't stick to them as is. I like to use dish soap.
Time to put it all together, then TRY IT IN THE SPACE IT WILL ACTUALLY GO. My measurements were close but I still had to go back to Home Depot to cut my pipe down so it would fit in the corner.
Once we were home with the right size, we were able to paint it and install it.
For the paper towel holder, I wanted it to be just the right size- SO I BROUGHT A PAPER TOWEL ROLL TO HOME DEPOT. There are no rules in building!
Then we zip tied our baskets to hooks so they could hang from the pipe. That's a follow up project at some point because I don't love the lewk of zipties. 😂☠️
Stay tuned for the upgrade to see the face life updating your cabinet hardware can do for less than $100! 🖤
Go get out in it. Go break the rules. Go do it your way. And don't let anyone tell you you can't. YOU CAN DO IT YOUR DAMN SELF TOO! 🖤🔥
